In the beginning of the semester, I was a
bit nervous about this class. I knew there had to be a lot of writing and I
knew I wasn't at all a good writer. I was just hoping that I wouldn't get a
professor who was tough and always had that serious expression all the time.
Writing wasn’t in my category at all, If it wasn’t in my major I probably
wouldn’t be here. My writing was bogus before I took this class and reading
books, I had no experience whatsoever in writing. I would write but it was to whatever
came to mind and have just jotted it
down, 5- 6 paragraphs, no proofreading done, I would hand it in and they’d give
it an good, well that was when I was in high school.
After being in
this class, especially with Professor Smith, my writing somewhat did a 360 degree,
I didn’t become a professional, but did I learned many new things about being a
writer. The Professor had everything settled on what we had to get done by the
end of the semester. He taught me to be more open to things especially when
writing an essay. I’ve learned to always have enough details to support your
main ideas, which I have never done before. Also having a thesis in your essay
makes the reader have more interest to what you are writing and explaining.
Even though I still get in the habit of not having a thesis, this class was just the start of learning to understand how a good writer is, which has
me a more confident when I write things, especially when we had to write blogs
in this class. It was actually a great writing exercise for me, learning and
going back to the mistakes I’ve made and completely understanding what needs to
get fix.
Our theme that we were reading about
through the semester was about Fast Food Nation. Reading this book made me
change my eating habits especially with fast food chains. I learned many things
about the Fast Food world. Things I couldn’t believe and process through my
head on how things got done with junk foods like McDonald, it may taste good
but ever since I started reading the book, I haven’t had fast food products
ever since. However, I am so glad I read this book; it taught me to eat in a healthier
way and to see that the fast food society is just garbage.
I still have a lot to learn about writing,
there was this saying my friend told me “You would always start from the bottom
to get to the top” and writing is what is for me. Being in this class has shown
my weakness, which was writing, and my strength was to never give up and to
always look back at what I’ve done throughout the writings I have done in this
class. I can’t express how much confidence I got during this class, it made it
easier for me to writer more in my life. All I can say is, I had the great English
professor.
